What is the TextCafé?

The TextCafé is a free offer of the AStA International for students of the University of Mainz. In the TextCafé you will get help with grammatical corrections, spelling and stylistic of already written academic texts, for example: presentations, exercises, seminar papers, term papers, final theses, etc.

How does the TextCafé work digitally?

Normally students meet with one of the tutors either at the AStA or on campus. Since the university will remain in emergency operation, the TextCafé appointments for the summer semester 2020 and winter semester 2020/2021 have been cancelled.
If you need support from the TextCafé, we will forward your written work to the tutors. Usually a correction takes a few days. Please note that a maximum of 4 hours per week may be used for proofreading during the lecture period, and 8 hours per week during the lecture-free period. The Text Café also offers online consultations, where you and the tutor read and correct the written work together.

The following steps must be followed:

1. Write us an e-mail from your university account (********@students.uni-mainz.de) Please include the following information in the e-mail:

• Matriculation number
• Type of work that needs to be corrected e.g. essay, presentation, term paper, final paper, etc.
• Title of the paper
• Text file in Word format

The only ones who have access to your work are the 3 lecturers from the AStA International office and one of the tutors who corrects your work.

2. After receiving your request with the above information, we will contact one of the tutors.

3. A tutor will then contact you by e-mail to discuss the details of reviewing and correcting your work.

4. After the complete correction of your written work, you and we will receive the corrected version of your work.

If you need support from a tutor for another paper or for additional sheets of the same paper, please first write an email to international@asta.uni-mainz.de with the details of step 1 and NEVER to the tutor himself.

If confidential data is used in the written work, we ask you to delete it and send us the text without the confidential data.

The costs for the correction will be paid by the AStA.

Do you want free theater tickets? AStA and Staatstheater Mainz have a cooperation:
In addition to increased cooperation in terms of content, this includes a solidary financing model between the theater and our student body, which enables every student to experience theater free of charge.
Starting three days before the desired performance date, JGU students will receive a free ticket at the box office upon presentation of their student ID and a valid identification document (e.g. passport). Subject to availability, tickets are issued for all seat categories, except seating area B. The only exceptions to this are premieres and special events such as guest performances.

It is also possible to take four additional tickets for fellow students for a nominal charge of € 2 per ticket.
The ticket and student identity card must then be presented upon admission.
The student ID must be shown without being asked when entering the theater!

Bike sharing: Mainzer Mobilität MeinRad

Students of the University of Mainz receive discounted rates at the bicycle rental system MVGmeinRad by showing their semester ticket.

Students pay only 0,50€ (instead of 1,00€) for the first 30 minutes. Every additional 30 minutes also costs 0,50€ up to a maximum daily price of 9€. Students receive further discounts in the so-called "Flex tariff".

Bike sharing: "ELMa" (Euer Lastenrad Mainz)

At various places in Mainz there is the possibility to rent cargo bikes. The offer is provided by a voluntary initiative of the Verkehrsclub Deutschland. The free lendings can be booked via https://lastenrad-mainz.de/ (in German)

The cargo bikes can be used to realize DIY store purchases, transport furniture or buy drinks and thus represent a free and environmentally friendly alternative to the car.

Car sharing

From now on you can use the complete car fleet of the car sharing provider book-n-drive at special conditions - this is made possible by a cooperation of the AStA of the University of Mainz with book-n-drive. With over 800 vehicles in 13 cities, book-n-drive is the largest car sharing provider in the Rhine-Main region.

Benefits at a glance:

• no fee at registration
• 10,00€ starting credit, valid six months from registration
• lower own contribution in case of damage: 300,00 instead of 1.500,00€
• simplified right of termination

Vehicles:

book-n-drive currently offers station-bound vehicles in four different classes (XS, S, M, L) - from city runabouts to vans, everything is available. Station-bound vehicles must always be returned to the station where you borrowed them. In addition, book-n-drive also operates so-called free-floating car sharing with the cityFlitzer fleet. The cityFlitzers can be opened spontaneously at the roadside without prior booking. Unlike station-bound vehicles, you can also make one-way trips from one city to another with a cityFlitzer. The cityFlitzer can be returned within the business area in Frankfurt am Main or at the cityFlitzer pools (in Darmstadt, Dieburg, Frankfurt am Main Airport, Mainz, Roßdorf and Wiesbaden). book-n-drive offers with Basic Campus, Komfort Campus and Abo Campus three different tariff models for students of the University of Mainz. In the Basic Campus rate, there is no start price and no monthly basic fee – you only pay when you use book-n-drive. Don't forget to fill up! The cost of fuel is included in the price per kilometer. When you return the vehicle, the tank must be at least ¼ full. In the key holder in the glove compartment you will find the fuel card that you can use to pay. You can fill up at all DKV gas stations. Die Hochschulgruppemesse ist die optimale Gelegenheit auf eure Arbeit als Hochschulgruppe aufmerksam zu machen. Besonders von neuen Studierenden wird diese genutzt um sich über mögliches ehrenamtliches Engagement (u.a. Kultur, Politik, Gemeinnütziges), den Unisport und vieles mehr zu informieren.

You can report all misdemeanour by lecturers or the university to the AStA. This includes discriminatory behavior of any kind as well as mandatory attendance and other deficiencies regarding studies and teaching. 

Discriminatory behavior such as racism, sexism, xenophobia, anti-Semitism, homophobia and transphobia as well as all other forms of discrimination, such as discrimination based on social origin, appearance or disability, and nationalism have no place at our university. If you encounter such behavior from one of our lecturers, you have the opportunity to report these incidences here. 

According to the current interdisciplinary and most of the subject-specific examination regulations as well as the university law of Rhineland-Palatinate, no lecture or seminar may require actual attendance in order to complete the module/course. There is no basis for attendance checks in such lectures and seminars.  There may further not be repercussions for repeated absences. Exceptions are field trips, internships and practical exercises such as language courses.  

This means that access to teaching materials (scripts, slides, etc.) must not be made dependent on actual attendance. If such materials are made available, all registered course participants must be able to access them (i. e., passwords for password-protected materials must be given upon request). Since some lecturers do not adhere to these requirements, we would like to use this form to notify us of such violations so that we can take steps to ensure that the examination regulations are also adhered by the lecturers.  

 In addition, there may also be various irregularities in teaching. These range from rare seminar places to inadequate equipment in courses. You can also report such deficiencies here so that we can present them collectively to the university administration.
