Tips for using the semester ticket

This page is intended to help you make the best possible use of the Semesterticket. For this purpose, we give you tips and hints for trips within the ticket area, but also tips on what to look out for when you want to travel outside the semester ticket area.

Attention: For students at the Germersheim location, the AStA at the Mainz location will not be providing any semester ticket refunds due to the introduction of the Germany semester ticket. You can find all the answers about the Germersheim semester ticket here (in German).

This information is only valid for students in Mainz. Students in Germersheim (FB 06: Translations-, Sprach- und Kulturwissenschaft) please note this information.

Semester ticket area

The semester ticket is valid:
  • on the city buses and trams in Mainz and Wiesbaden (Mainzer Mobilität and ESWE Verkehr),
  • on the entire network of the Rhein-Main-Verkehrsverbund (RMV),
  • on the entire network of the Rhein-Nahe-Nahverkehrsverbund (RNN),
  • in the transition area from RMV to VRN (for more details click here),
  • in the transition area Alzey/Worms of the RNN (for more details click here), and
  • in regional traffic on the railroad line on the left side of the Rhine between Bingen Hbf via Bacharach and Boppard to Koblenz Hbf (but not in the city area of Koblenz).

IMPORTANT: On the railroad line between Bingen Hbf via Bacharach and Koblenz Hbf, only local trains may be used (not IC, EC and ICE).

Transitional areas in which the semester ticket is valid

The semester ticket is also valid in two transition areas, namely in the transition area from RMV to VRN and in the transition area Alzey/Worms of RNN. You can find out exactly which areas these are in the respective honeycomb maps of the RMV (in German) and RNN (in German). We give you a small list here. However, this is not complete, but only an overview.

How to get from Mainz to Koblenz for free?

The semester ticket is also valid on the left sideof the Rhine between Mainz, Bingen and Koblenz Hbf. In order to find the corresponding journeys, you must pay attention to the following: The semester ticket is only valid as far as Koblenz main station. It is not valid as far as the stop "Koblenz Stadtmitte" and also not for bus transport in Koblenz.
  • You take regional transport, i.e. regional trains or regional express trains.
The semester ticket is not valid in ICs, ECs or ICEs.
  • You take a train that stops in Bingen(Rhein) main station and/or Bacharach and/or Boppard. So you will definitely find a train that runs on the left side of the Rhine.
The semester ticket is only valid on the right side of the Rhine as far as Lorchhausen, not as far as Koblenz.

For one-time trips

Outward journey from the ticket area

The decisive factor is always which stop on your planned outward journey is the last one in the Semesterticket area. It does not matter whether the train stops at this station or not. Please refer to the map of the semester ticket area and to the section The last stops in the semester ticket area.

In addition, it is decisive whether you also change trains at this last stop or not. Therefore, we have also incorporated this.

Return journey into the ticket area

The decisive factor is always which stop on your planned return journey is the first in the semester ticket area. It does not matter whether the train stops at this station or not. Please refer to the map of the semester ticket area and the section The last stops in the semester ticket area.

If you often travel out of the ticket area to another tariff area, it may be worthwhile to buy a corresponding connection ticket that is valid for a longer period of time. We inform you here which such tickets we know. Whether the respective ticket makes sense for you depends on your situation and, above all, on how often you travel to the area and back.

...in the area of VRN (without Westpfalz)

VRN-Anschluss-Semester-Ticket
The Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Neckar (VRN) offers a so-called Anschluss-Semester-Ticket. This is valid for one semester, is valid in the light-yellow area (see map to the left) and costs € 215.60€ (as of April 9, 2021) according to the price information of the VRN.

...in the VRN-Westpfalz area (without the rest of VRN)

VRN-Westpfalz-Anschluss-Semester-Ticket
The Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Neckar (VRN) offers a so-called Westpfalz-Anschluss-Semester-Ticket. This is valid for one semester, is valid in the light-blue area (see map to the left) and costs € 197.60€ (as of April 9, 2021) according to the price information of the VRN.

We are not aware of any other comparable offers from other areas like the ones mentioned. It may be that there is something similar there in each case.
